Cabo Delgado: Volatile, unsafe conditions for humanitarian agencies – UN

Security conditions in Cabo Delgado remain volatile, and the main districts affected by the armed insurgency remain inaccessible for humanitarian teams, reads on Tuesday a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

“The security situation in Cabo Delgado remains volatile with ongoing military operations in certain parts of the province, including the areas near Mueda, Muidumbe and Mocímboa da Praia due to the active presence of non-state armed groups,” the document distributed in Maputo said.

During the period covered by the report, from 15 December to 15 January, there was also a significant escalation of attacks by armed groups in the districts of Palma, Nangade and Macomia, including armed attacks in the Afungi peninsula, where the megaproject for natural gas exploration is being built, the UNHCR noted.

The districts of Quissanga, Macomia, Meluco, Mocímboa da Praia, Muidumbe and Nangade, the worst affected by the rebel attacks, remain inaccessible to United Nations (UN) agencies and other humanitarian organisations due to insecurity, the strong presence of armed groups and ongoing police and military operations.

The armed violence in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, is causing a humanitarian crisis with some 2,000 deaths and over half a million displaced people.

According to the report distributed by UNHCR, there are 530,000 displaced by the armed conflict in search of a haven in other districts of Cabo Delgado and the neighbouring provinces of Niassa and Nampula.

“There has been a significant increase in the number of IDPs – approximately 100,000 new displaced persons since November 2020 – as a result of continuing violence,” where some of the incursions have been claimed by the jihadist Islamic State group since 2019.
